MICHAEL COX MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT GIVES BACK

Our Story

The Michael Cox Memorial Golf Tournament was started as a way for a group of friends to honour one of their own, who sadly passed away after a double lung transplant in 2013.  At first it was a weekend away to play some golf, share some laughs and memories…..

Mike was the glue that kept a large number of friend together through all of life’s ups and downs, struggles and accomplishments, marriages, and children. In 2014, the tournament was opened up to the public in order to raise money for the Trillium Gift of Life Network. With 50 golfers, and many generous sponsors, we raised over $2000.00.  Since then we have grown to over 140 golfers and we have been able to donate over $19,000 to Trillium Gift of Life and Local Families in need of support in Mike’s memory!

Meet Jonathan, Amanda and Ryder

This Year's Family.....

It’s uncanny how you can come upon a an individual’s story that hits close to home…

Jonathan’s story is just that. So many similarities to the struggles that our beloved friend Mike faced and such a personality match that one can only hope they have met in heaven and are sharing their uncanny sense if humour. Jonathon’s  infectious smile, his class clown ways, and an empathetic heart endeared him to his family and acquaintances from all walks of life, he was a friend to all.  In 2015, Jonny met Amanda, and Ryder VanNeste Oldroyd was born November 13, 2017. Their apartment was filled with couples photos and declarations of love even though his lung condition diagnosed as COPD was getting worse and worse.

Unfortunately, he wouldn’t have the opportunity for a double lung transplant and a second lease on life.  On February 1st, 2019, Jonathan passed away in his sleep at his parents’ house after enjoying his favourite meal, video chatting with his son and teasing his mom and dad about keeping him awake past his bedtime.  Jonathan was just 34 years old, leaving behind a 28 year old widow and a 15 month old son.  Jonathan was a truly wonderful light in this world, a loving man who radiated happiness.  He was so proud to be everyone’s best friend, a loving father, and a kind romantic husband.  His health challenges prevented him from supporting his family as he would have liked which was his only worry.  This year the proceeds from our tournament will go to help this young family get back on their feet and move forward remembering and honouring Jonathon.
